Hey folks, It’s Jenn from A Jennuine Life with this month’s Thrifty to Nifty project.  I’m here to share an easy home decor project I made from materials I had on hand – Latitude/Longitude Wall Art.

These coordinates are for the exact location where my husband and I first met at a summer party held by a pair of mutual friends.  This could be a great gift idea since you could choose any location with meaning – first meeting, homes you’ve lived in; the possibilities are endless!

To get the coordinates, go to https://itouchmap.com/latlong.html and enter your location or zoom in on the map if your location isn’t an address like mine.  My coordinates were 43.605987 and -84.251715.  You could leave it as a decimal, or convert it into degrees, minutes and seconds at https://andrew.hedges.name/experiments/convert_lat_long/.  I converted mine into N 43° 36′ 22″ and W -84° 15′ 6″

1.  I gathered up supplies I had on hand: burlap leftover from my younger daughter’s first birthday party, a frame which was missing the glass as it had fallen off the shelf in my office, freezer paper, and black fabric paint.  You could easily use different materials – get creative and see what you can re-purpose!

2.  I used my Silhouette to cut a stencil from freezer paper.  You could do this by hand – I’ve done it many a time myself as I only recently purchased a Silhouette.  This could also be a nice embroidery project if you have that skill.

3.  Secure the burlap onto the cardboard backing of the frame.  I used painter’s tape and it worked well.  First I cut the fabric about 2″ larger on all sides and then clipped the corners at a 45° angle.  The frame will hide the frayed edges.

4.  Put the burlap into the frame and push the little tab thingies down to hold it in place and then hang it on the wall or place it on a shelf.

This took under an hour to make and I love that it’s a little secret between my husband and me – well okay, you’re all in on it now!

I enjoy transforming thrifty items into something special, and I love to see your projects and feature them as well!  I’d be so pleased if you came for a visit and linked up at Thrifty to Nifty Thursdays (that’s today!) at A Jennuine Life.

  1. Great idea! My husband and I were geography/cartography majors in college – hence our love affair for maps/globes/ geography and each other. We have shirts with the coordinates of our college campus (UMBC: University of Maryland, Baltimore County), and have always thought of that as our ‘place’. I will be stealing, uh taking inspiration from, this. I need some ideas for our master bedroom. Thanks!

  2. Love this simple and sweet idea. I too may have to steal or take inspiration from it.
