My kids and I have been making magic reindeer food ever since my oldest was in Kindergarten. (She’s now in college!) It’s a fun Christmas Eve tradition to participate in during the holiday season.

You might be asking yourself just what is magic reindeer food?. You may have seen the idea around over the years and didn’t think twice about it.

We all leave cookies and a tall glass of milk for Santa, but let’s not forget the reindeer who need a little boost of energy too.

We need to make sure Santa’s reindeer have enough energy to pull Santa’s sleigh and to make it around the world to deliver gifts.

To help them out, we can sprinkle some Magic Reindeer Food on the lawn Christmas Eve.

Fun Christmas Traditions for Families with Small Children

We don’t have many Christmas traditions because it’s always a toss up where we will spend Christmas each year. 99.9% of the time we are home on Christmas Eve so doing what we can to help Santa’s reindeer fly is a no brainer.

The second I came across this fun Christmas tradition, I new I had to make it apart of our celebrations.

Sprinkling magic reindeer food on the front lawn before bedtime on Christmas Eve has become the one tradition that we all look forward to each year. I’m sure this special treat for Rudolph and his gang is greatly appreciated.

Not only is this so much fun to do with little kids but it’s a fun activity for the whole family to get involved in.

Ideas for Sharing this Magical Mixture

Making magic reindeer food for your family or to share with friends and neighbors doesn’t have to be a chore. You don’t have to get crazy if you aren’t the creative type.

This is literally such a simple idea that you can whip it up in no time and there are many simple ideas for giving away this magical mixture.

  • A Clear Bag – You know the ones. You can buy them in the baking aisle at your local craft store or HERE on Amazon.
  • Plastic Test Tubes – This is my favorite way to share this reindeer mix. I even have free printable reindeer food tags that you can download made especially for test tubes. See bottom of post for the free download.
  • Ziploc Bag – This is a very popular way of sharing magic reindeer food. We’ve done it that way in the past before we moved onto to test tubes. I even have printable bag toppers just for this method. You can find them HERE.
  • Baby Food Jars – This is a good idea for those who like to recycle and repurpose.

Magical Reindeer Food Recipe

Making a batch of reindeer food is as easy as 1-2-3 and there’s really no right or wrong way to make it. My easy recipe always consists of these 3 simple ingredients: sprinkles, oatmeal and sugar…or as we like to call it, magic dust.

This simple recipe can be whipped up right along side of baking Christmas cookies since you will likely use these very same ingredients in your holiday baking.

Whether you’re making big or small batch of your favorite reindeer food recipe, start with a cup sugar, cup oatmeal and cup of green sugar crystals or sprinkles and go from there.

For this particular project I did about a tablespoon per layer. I also love that if you forget to do this until it’s almost too late it takes 2 minutes to whip up.

These little test tubes filled with reindeer food would make the best classroom Christmas gift at your child’s holiday party. You could even give them out to the other special kids in your life who might like it during this Christmas season.
