CHRISTMAS CRAFTS TO MAKE AND SELL

I’ve always wanted to sell some of my handmade projects but never took the plunge. That all changed last year when a co-worker inspired me to just finally bite the bullet.

I’m so glad I did!

To keep it simple, I put the word out to my Facebook friends and family that I was taking orders for some custom gifts. In all honesty, I wasn’t anticipating much interest.

To say I was pleasantly surprised was an understatement.

Throughout the creative process of making custom family name ornaments, money holder ornaments and Treats for Santa Cutting Boards, in addition to designing my own stickers and labels, I came to realize how much I loved selling finished goods.

I even loved packing and shipping. What??

HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL SELLING HANDMADE CHRISTMAS CRAFTS

I’m no expert but selling handmade crafts last year taught me a few things about how to be successful selling Christmas crafts.

1 | Start Early – I started selling custom Christmas ornaments around the 1st week of November. That left me enough time to set a cut-off date for shipping so that I wasn’t stressed in the weeks right before Christmas.

2 | Where and Who – Figure out where you want to sell your crafts (i.e. craft fairs, Etsy shop, Facebook group, etc.) and who you want your customers to be.

Since it was my first year selling, I kept it close. I knew that I didn’t want to sell to random people. I only wanted to sell to people I knew. For that reason I didn’t sell at any local craft fairs.

I picked one custom craft, mastered making it and then shared it on my personal Facebook page. I honestly was not expecting much of a response.

I was wrong. I made and sold over 75 custom family Christmas ornaments in addition to Cookies for Santa cutting boards and money holder Christmas ornaments.

3 | Keeping Orders Organized – Since I didn’t list my ornaments in my shop, I had to come up with a system that worked and kept me organized.

What that looked like for me was creating order forms using Google forms. I posted the link and people placed their orders that way. I made sure I had a space for preferred payment method while only offering options that suited me (i.e. Venmo, Paypal, cash).

4 | Pricing and Shipping – I wanted to sell my Christmas crafts at affordable prices. I researched to see what similar items were selling for and stayed within that range. Handmade crafts and gifts are a lot of work and you need to make sure it’s worth your time (and let’s face it, aggravation, periodically lol).

I used the site Pirate Ship for shipping and created test labels to get shipping estimates. I picked a few random zip codes from all over the US and then gave my customers ballpark shipping prices upfront.

5 | Packaging – Since my Christmas crafts of choice were wooden ornaments, I needed to make sure they survived in the mail. I thought bubble mailers would be fine, especially if I wrapped the ornament up in tissue paper first.

Unfortunately that wasn’t the case and some arrived broken. I created new ornaments, purchased shipping boxes instead (they cost the same in shipping so that was a win) and shipped the rest that way.

6 | Branding – You want your packaging to be memorable so do something unique. Once I switched to shipping my product in boxes, I added a jingle bell to the inside of the box.

How fun it must have been to receive a Christmas packages that jingled!

I also created some “Thank You” cards in Canva as well as some fun labels and stickers for the outsides of my packages.
